Just like any birthday party, you are going to have some kind of cake to cut at a Quinceanera. However, a Quinceañera isn’t like any other birthday, it is a special day for the young woman who is turning fifteen and now considered a woman. Quinceanera cakes then should be something more than just a regular birthday cake, and it usually is.
After the Misa de accion de gracias (Thanksgiving Mass) where the Quinceanera ceremony takes place, all family and friends in attendance go to the place where the party will be held. This is where those in attendance will enjoy themselves with dancing, visiting, eating, and celebrating the young woman’s rite of passage.
Quinceanera cakes are part of the highlight of the evening. Usually the cakes are enormous multi-layered, sometimes even large enough that doors leading to the party location need to be removed to allow passage of the cake into the hall.
Traditional cakes will be decorated with dripping meringue frosting dyed in hues to match the Quinceanera’s dress and theme colors. Basically, these cakes are almost like wedding cakes in the Western world.
Many people choose to hire the baking out, due to the large proportions of the cake. This job is not cheap, however, so make sure to get price quotes from various cake makers. You may even want to look at different pictures of some of the cakes that baker has made in the past to get some good ideas.
Most cakes that I have seen are held on tiers that accentuate the size of the cake even more. A lot of times the cakes are even decorated with fresh flowers to match the bouquet of the young woman.
When the time of the cutting of the cake arrives, there is usually a toast right before and then music to accompany the cutting. All are invited to eat the cake. The top layer isn’t saved for the young woman like on a wedding day.
Quinceanera cakes are definitely one aspect of the party that is a necessity. You will want to take some time to plan out the details of what kind of cake you want and who is going to make it.
