Mexican Quinceanera Mass
Though most of the planning of a quinceanera celebration is focused on the dinner and party, the traditional Mexican quinceanera mass is also an important part of this deeply rooted tradition. Due to all of the attention and preparation needed for the celebration, some Quince girls don’t even know what to expect from the church portion of their special day. The following is a summery of what can be expected during a traditional Mexican quinceanera mass.
A Mexican quinceanera mass has a lot of the same elements as a normal catholic mass. However, some extra traditions are incorporated to make the ceremony special for the quinceanera girl. For example the Quinceanera will carry her ultima muneca (last doll) down the aisle with her. This doll represents the last toy she will own as a child and is a symbol of her leaving childhood things behind in order to become a woman. Some Quinceaneras exchange this doll for a bouquet of flowers, which are then left on the Alter at the end of the services as a sign of faith.
There may also be a kneeling pillow that is often embroidered with the Quinceanera’s name or initials, and is placed under her knees during the mass. The Quinceanera will also read a prayer of dedication that is often followed by the parents’ words of gratitude to both the guests and the Quinceanera herself.
A Mexican Quinceanera mass will also include another adult couple, who could be the godparents appointed at birth or an additional couple that the Quinceanera feels will be involved in her adult life. The mass will traditionally include some special observances and readings presented by close friends or family members. The priest will also bless a rosary, bible and other gifts such as jewelry that will be presented to the Quinceanera at her following reception. The jewelry is usually a necklace or a ring and signifies the unbreakable bond between the girl and her faith. The mother and godmother also partake in a coronation ceremony where they both place a crown or tiara onto the girls head as a tribute to ancient culture where the young women would be considered the “princess” of her family and God.
